IIT Technology Services at Georgia State University sent students two Campus Broadcasts warning about Fraudulent Emails showing up at their university inboxes.

An email sent on August 17th claims that a students university account is expiring, followed with a link and form to complete.

Another sent on August 27 falsely claims to be hiring a Personal Assistant, asking students to submit a resume to an email address.

Chief Information Security Officer of Georgia State University Ron Flot says if even one user falls for one of these emails, cyber attackers can gain access to the email addresses of others.

Since then, Georgia State’s Cyber Security team says they will investigate the latest email and take steps to protect members of the Georgia State community. They also say one of the best ways to mitigate attackers is through education.

PRN reached out to the Cyber Security team for the best ways you can protect email address and take precaution.

  1. First, be cautious if an email has poor grammar and spelling claiming to be from a reputable sender.
  2. Next, be careful about engaging with emails that ask for your personal information. This can include your used, password, social security, or financial information.
  3. Finally, be watchful if an email warns you about a danger through urgent language if you do not reply. The emails would typically also ask for personal information.

Georgia State’s Cyber Security team proactively monitor any emails they believe are fraudulent.
