Georgia State University cancels its spring commencement ceremonies due to the public health emergency created by the coronavirus.
The message from Georgia State President Mark Becker comes after the University System of Georgia instructed institutions to suspend large events to support social distancing.
“To our graduating students, the university fully understands how profoundly disappointing this news is for you,” President Becker says. “I know how meaningful and important a commencement is, and we want to celebrate your achievements in an appropriate fashion.”
Students on track will still graduate, even though the ceremonies will not take place. Spring graduation ceremonies for all degree levels were scheduled from May 4 to May 8 at the Georgia State Stadium.
President Becker also says the university will find ways to honor graduating students when it is able to.
“We are committed to finding ways to honor you at a time when large gatherings are once again safe,” President Becker says. “At that time, we will turn our attention to identifying where, when and how to do so, and we will communicate directly with graduates when the details become available.”
